What is BDSM
BDSM is a variety of erotic practices involving dominance and submission, roleplaying, bondage, and other interpersonal dynamics. Given the wide range of practices, some of which may be engaged in by people who do not consider themselves as practicing BDSM, inclusion in the BDSM community or subculture is usually dependent on self-identification and shared experience. Interest in BDSM can range from one-time experimentation to a lifestyle.

The term BDSM is first dated from 1969. The term BDSM was formed by joining the term B&D (bondage and discipline) with S&M (sadomasochism, or sadism and masochism). It is sometimes believed to contain within it the compound D&S (dominance and submission) but this is an example of folk etymology. BDSM is used today (2015) as a catch-all phrase covering a wide range of activities, forms of interpersonal relationships, and distinct subcultures. BDSM communities generally welcome anyone with a non-normative streak who identifies with the community; this may include cross-dressers, extreme body modification enthusiasts, animal players, latex or rubber aficionados, and others.Unlike the usual "power neutral" relationships and play styles commonly followed by couples, activities and relationships within a BDSM context are often characterized by the participants' taking on complementary, but unequal roles; thus, the idea of informed consent of both the partners becomes essential. Participants who exert sexual dominance over their partners are known as dominants or tops, while participants who take the passive, receiving, or obedient role are known as submissives or bottoms.

Individuals are also sometimes abbreviated when referred to in writing, so a dominant person may be referred to as a "dom" for a man or a woman. Sometimes a woman may choose to use the female specific term "domme". Both terms are pronounced the same when spoken. Individuals who can change between top/dominant and bottom/submissive roles—whether from relationship to relationship or within a given relationship—are known as switches. The precise definition of roles and self-identification is a common subject of debate, reflection, and discussion within the community

Bondage

Bondage itself does not imply sadomasochism. Bondage may be used as an end into itself, as in the case of rope bondage and breast bondage. It may also be used as a part of sex or in conjunction with other BDSM activities. The letter "B" in the acronym "BDSM" comes from the word "bondage". Sexuality and erotica are an important aspect in bondage, but are often not the end in itself. Aesthetics also plays an important role in bondage.

A common reason for the active partner to tie up their partner is so both may gain pleasure from the restrained partner's submission and the feeling of the temporary transfer of control and power. For sadomasochistic people, bondage is often used as a means to an end, where the restrained partner is more accessible to other sadomasochistic behavior. However, bondage can also be used for its own sake. The active partner can derive visual pleasure from seeing their partner tied up, and the restrained partner can derive tactile pleasure from the feeling of helplessness and immobility.

Sadism

Sadomasochism involves the giving and receiving/experiencing of pain. The masochist transforms this pain into pleasure, while the sadist allows the administration of pain to produce its own fulfilling forms of pleasure. It is as intense as it sounds. The Dominant/submissive dynamic, however, is about control. The submissive does whatever the Dominant asks: period. The submissive looks to the Dominant for complete and utter control, as the Dominant looks to the submissive for complete and utter obedience.  Unlike the sadomasochistic dynamic, inflicting pain is not always a component of the Dominant/submissive relationship. It can be, but it doesn’t have to be. There is frequently overlap between the roles of Dominant and Sadist, just as there is between masochist and submissive. This article is strictly about the sadomasochistic dynamic. The most important thing to know is that the people who participate in sadomasochism play have agreed to everything in advance. Everyone participating wants to do this and they have put precautions in place in case it stops being fun, such as safe words.  With that in place, they draw off of each other’s energy, reactions, and responses to build a dramatic scene and ultimately experience an intensely passionate experience together.

Discipline

Discipline is the use of rules and punishment to control overt behavior. It is the D in BDSM.

Punishment can be pain caused physically (such as caning), humiliation caused physically (such as an enema) or psychologically (such as public exposure) or loss of freedom caused physically (such as chaining the controlee to the foot of a bed, for snoring).

Punishment is often given in response to some rule being broken. Rules can be applied randomly by dominants as a tool for disorienting a sub, or by a sadist as a pretext to inflict punishment. However, a disciplinarian is one who enjoys gaining control over someone’s physical actions and apparent behavior by training them to obey clear and stated rules.

Bondage when used as a punishment is still bondage, but because it is overtly being done in response to a rule being broken, it is also part of the discipline. Punishment does not need to be physical. It can be loss of privileges (such as having an orgasm this month), being ordered to do a task (such as writing lines on a blackboard) on threat of further punishment if not finished correctly, it can be verbal humiliation, or really any act that you can inflict on the controlee or get them to inflict on themselves that they don’t like.

Of course, one person’s punishment is another’s reward. For some of us, twenty lashes is a dread prospect. For others, it’s the beginning of a lovely evening.

Many D/s relationships include the pretense of punishment as an item of play in its own right: acts that both partners can pretend constitute punishment, but which in fact constitute reward or mutual play. “You’ve been a bad girl, I’m going to have to spank you for that”; “Well, since you couldn’t hold off coming, you’ll have to clean that up with your tongue”; “If you won’t stay still, I’m just going to have to tie you up.” All of these sound, on the surface, like punishment, but any kinky person knows better. For many people who are into dominance and submission, but also into keeping things light, this sort of thing can be a major part of erotic play.

Masochism

Sadomasochism, a subset of BDSM, is the giving or receiving of pleasure from acts involving the receipt or infliction of pain or humiliation. Practitioners of sadomasochism may seek sexual gratification from their acts. While the terms sadist and masochist refer respectively to one who enjoys giving or receiving pain, practitioners of sadomasochism may switch between activity and passivity.

The abbreviation S&M is often used for sadomasochism, although practitioners themselves normally remove the ampersand and use the acronym SM or S/M.[ Sadomasochism is not considered a clinical paraphilia unless such practices lead to clinically significant distress or impairment for a diagnosis. Similarly, sexual sadism within the context of mutual consent should not be mistaken for acts of sexual violence or aggression.
